Toto (Mohamed Mahmud Mohamed Ibrahim)

Born in a working-class neighbourhood of Cairo, Toto learned to dance in the street. His work focuses on the energy and expressive power of Egyptian popular and urban art forms, while placing them in dialogue with contemporary and Western contexts.

He was initially a professional football player before turning to theatre, performance, and then contemporary dance. He graduated from the full-time professional training programme at the Cairo Contemporary Dance Centre, headed by choreographer Karima Mansour. He worked with Olivier Dubois on the piece Itmahrag, which toured in France and across Europe in 2021 and 2022.

He now regularly leads Shaabi dance workshops in Marseille and the Paris region and collaborates with numerous artists. He is one of the co-founders of the Wiwaa collective, which aims to promote Egyptian artists in France.
